dont know if this is the right section, but here it goes.

the computer resets when there is a load put on it, sometimes it doesnt even need much of a load. the only error message that comes up is: i8042prt. basically what i got out of that was that the computer isnt recognizing the PS/2 port, but that doesnt make sense to why it is resetting when that error is issued. i have tried to disable the ports via BIOS but there isnt anything in the BIOS about peripherals. then i tried to do it via device manager and nothing there either.

now for the specs:
its a compaq presario 5310US - completely factory
256 megs RAM
1.2 ghz celeron processor
Windows XP home.

Are you using a PS/2 keyboard and mouse?

should i change to a ps/2 keyboard and mouse? as far as i know, it has always used the usb keyboard and mouse. and why would it be fine for 6 months time and then start the problem over?

this is why we ended up just reinstalling windows last time, but this time the computer is full of pictures and whatnot, so i need to get all the data off of the computer. whats the simplest way, yet cheap. we are going to buy a new hdd for it soon anyways.

If you get a new HDD you can slave the old and extract whatever data you need.

You might want to run the HDD diagnostics for the current drive...these can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.
