Hi all.
:)
I have here, an older ATi Radeon 9250 Pro AGP card.
It is listed as an 8X card.
Can I put it in a 4X board?
The voltage is 1.5v, and so is the motherboard AGP voltage.
I don't really care if it runs a little slower then the designed 8X, I just want to know if you can do this.
The motherboard I plan to use, is a Giggabyte GA-GE800 PGA 478 P4 Mb +1.7CPU.
The basic info on this board, says that it's AGP is a 4X one, 1.5v only, if that helps...
Thanks.

It's not likely to be an 8x-only vid card, but it is possible. You'll have to look up the manufacturer data on the vid card to be sure. If it is an 8x-only vid card, then you can't plug it into that mobo. If it's an 8x/4x vid card, it will work fine.

Hey Saph, thanks.
I looked in the software(the card is still in use in another box at the moment), and there is a slider - you can select 2X 4X and 8X speed.
Therefore, I would ASSUME that I can use this card in the other board.
...but you know what they say about assumptions!

Your AGP 8X card should work in a 4X slot.
I have an ATI A-I-W 9800 Pro 8X card on a Soyo P4S Dragon Ultra that has a 4X AGP slot in my Linux (Mandriva 2007) box and it works fine.

Your AGP 8X card should work in a 4X slot.Careful what you say! An 8x-only vid card won't work. And the Radeon 9250 was a late revision of the budget end - well into the time period when 8x-only vid cards were being produced. While I agree with you in a statistical sense, it's not a guarantee.
go get a 2004 or 2005 solo core manIf you want to pay for someone else's hardware upgrades, go right ahead. But don't make fun of someone just because they can't afford the latest hardware for all their computers. A P4 1.7 GHz with a Radeon 9250 isn't up to par for the latest games, or even Vista, but there are still plenty of uses for such hardware. WinXP would run just fine, as would nearly all distro's of Linux. Ubuntu running a firewall and file server? Plenty of power!

even my 4 years old comp is better than that and it only worth like 100 bucks right now??? not trying to make fun of him but really he could of get a better comp for 100 or 200 bucks. 300 bucks for 3.2ghz solo core.

But the thing is some people, believe it or not, don't have 300 bucks let alone 100. I know, I've been there.

Me, too. When you've hit a bump in life, spending money isn't an option.
Besides, I know for a fact that Mini-Me has several other systems of varying hardware. This must be his oldest one.

Owwwwwww - sarcastic, arn't we?!??!(rhetorical)
Take your solo core and post on someone else's thread please.
For your information, the machine is running XP Pro.
It's purpose in life, is as a mediaplayer.
The box I am currently using, is an EVEN OLDER Socket 462 Sempron 2200+, running XP Pro, and it runs fine.
You don't need dual, triple or quad core CPU's to play back video - not unless you are running Vista!!!

Administrators - this guy is a troll.
Investigate please - we don't need members like this posting totally irrelevant answers to questions; the question was about AGP 4X/8X - not about hardware upgrades and the costs therein...
US$300 = NZ$600.
Why should I spend $600 for a system with more power then needed.
Besides which, I don't feel like spending $600.
Respectfully, do not post back here on this thread again - you are not helping.

I am running an ATI 9250se 8x AGP graphics card in my Biostar M7Vig Pro mobo which is rated for a "measly" 4x AGP. It works absolutely fine in the board. Incidentally it also has an "archaic" AMD XP 2400+ (2ghz) cpu with a gig of ram.
It suits my selected OS's of Mepis and Ubuntu just fine thank you very much. Hope this helps more than at least one of the previous posts.

Thanks for your comment. Will be building the "New" box tonight, if I can find the time, so will know pretty quickly, I guess - if it won't POST with the card in there, it probably isn't supported; if it does POST with it in there, I suppose it does(i know - more to it then that, but this would be an encouraging first step!)
