I wanted to try Linux, so I installed Kubuntu on a new hard drive and I'm fed up with it and would now like to install Windows on it.

I tried erasing it with DBAN which is an ISO file, but I couldn't successfully burn it to a disc. I tried burning it on with ISO Recorder and it kept eating my discs and I tried burning it with CD Burner XP (which DBAN recommends) and it kept telling me I didn't have an empty CD in my burner (I tried several different CDs).

Does anyone know how I can do this? I want to put Windows ME that I have from Recovery discs on it and then install my Windows XP upgrade over that.

What brand HDD is it? Use the manufacturer's utility to erase the drive.
See sticky post to find HDD mfg utilities:

It's a WD Caviar. I looked at the WD Caviar link on the page you linked to, but I don't know which piece of software to burn. Also, I don't have any floppies, so I'd like to do this with a CD.

Try here (http://support.wdc.com/download/?cxml=n&pid=2&swid=30).

If not you can do this with BiNG (in my sig) by going into its maintenance mode and deleting all partitions and then go into the MBR section and write a standard mbr to the drive.

Two iso burner apps you might want to try:
ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com/)
BurnCDCC (http://www.bootitng.com/utilities.html)

The one I tried and liked better than DBAN was KILLDISK (http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm) [can make a bootable CD using their own free ISO Burner (http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm)].

Just to let it be known that KillDisk and other Active@ products are not currently "flavour of the month" since they have been involved with systematic and very sneaky spamming of these forums initiated by spurious requests for help. It is most unlikely, of course, that they are your paymasters. ;)

Is there anything that suggests that the nasty individuals doing this are in any way linked to the company?

I'd be slightly astonished if a company who produces such good software would be so desperate or foolish as to involve themselves in this kind of activity. :(

Perhaps their competitors are trying to ruin their reputation.
