Hi all,
I want to escape from the clutches of my epsom printer and its expensive cartridges. I am looking for a printer that is inexpensive to operate (low cost ink). Black and white only will do, and only for occasional printing at home. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, get a used business grade laser printer if you can find one. Cartridges cost about 80-120 dollars depending on the model. Expensive laser printers have the best cost per page. I have an old B/W HP laserjet II and III that i picked up for $20 bucks each at a Goodwill (my friend let me in on his Goodwill and old business grade printers secret). The cartridges are $80+. Last time we calculated cost was about 5-7 cents per page. If you can't find one I would just look at cost per page, but generally the more expensive the printer, the less the price per page is for black and white prints. Business class printers long term are much cheaper if you print a lot. HP's are great.

Go for a low-end epson inkjet and generic ink. Generic replacement ink cartridges cost about $5 a pop and they will last you more than a hundred printed pages.

I bought a HP Deskjet D1320 at Wal-Mart for less than $50. It does a good job. Mine came with only the Color cartridge, but even after buying the black caret ridge the total coast was still less than $50.
