Hello all---I am having a real big problem and I am hoping you guys can help me out.

My sons laptop will not boot up--only to a blue screen with the following errors:

A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER,
IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOUVE SEEN THIS STOP ERROR SCREEN, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. IF THIS SCREEN APPEARS AGAIN, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

DISABLE OR UNINSTALL ANY ANTI-VIRUS, DISK DEFRAGMENTATION OR BACKUP UTILITIES. CHECK YOUR HARD DRIVE CONFIGURATION, AND CHECK FOR ANY UPDATED DRIVERS. RUN CHKDSK /F TO CHECK FOR HARD DRIVE CORRUPTION, AND THEN RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

ITS A DELL INSPIRION 9300 1.73 GHZ P4
OS-----WIN XP
SEAGATE 60 GB HD
1024 MB MEMORY
SONY DVD+-RW

I HAVE TRIED THE FOLLOWING:

I WAS ABLE TO RUN DELL UTILITY AND EVERYTHING CHECKS OUT OK--THIS WAS THE ONLY THING IT WOULD ALLOW ME TO ACCESS.
I TRIED TO BOOT FROM WIN XP BOOT CD BUT NOTHING
I CHANGED THE BOOT SEQUENCE AND NOTHING
I TESTED CD DRIVE IT WORKS FINE
I TRIED TO RUN SEAGATE TOOLS CD BUT NOTHING
AND LASTLY WHEN I PURCHASED THIS PC FROM DELL THEY DID NOT SEND ME THE ORIGINAL OS WINXP CD.

WELL I KNOW THIS IS ALOT BUT I AM PRAYING YOU GUYS OR GALS OUT THERE CAN GIVE ME A HAND ON THIS PROBLEM. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP I CAN GET. MY SON USES THIS PC ON A DAILY BASIS FOR SCHOOL. THANKS AGAIN.

You are looking at some major disk problems...at the worst. More than your garden variety file system problems at the least.

Scroll down the page to see the exact Stop error...

http://www.updatexp.com/stop-messages.html

The section on 0x00000024 gives you this link at MS (it is for 2k, but the problem/troubleshooting techniques will work for XP)....

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228888

Now, if you don't have an XP disk handy to be able to run the Recovery Console from you may be better off removing the drive from the laptop, installing it into a USB drive housing and then hooking it up to a working XP install to run chkdsk from.

hello---no it would not boot up in safe mode.now i bought a new battery and a new hard drive but i am afraid this might not be the drive for my pc. it was a 60gb and i bought a 160gb and this is for a dell inspirion 9300. is there any place to compare or see compatability--any suggestions?

A dell of that era would normally have a bios that should support a drive of that size. Are you sure the drive is not detected in the BIOS setup?

the pins are different on this new hd
Sounds like you got a SATA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA) in place of an IDE (http://www.iol.ie/~krakowangus/idepins/) drive.

The BIOS setup is entered by pressing a nominated key during bootup. If that isnt clear then ESC should usually clear the screen to see the prompts. It is commonly DEL or ESC or F1 or F2.

Dell uses F2 to enter setup.

What is your Service Tag #, located on the back of the laptop?

What is the model number on the new hard drive?

service tag# 7zmb091

Western Digital model#wd1600bevs----160gb

The old hard drive is a Seagate model#st960822a----60gb

Where do i go from here? Should I return the new one? Please help. :D

You have a new sata and an old ide

The laptop will not work with sata
Return it and get an IDE

Here is a link to a number of drives that will fit
