Hi Guys,
When I boot the system, the MB screen appears and then the post, after the XP screen appears with the moving cursor boxes on the bottom and then the problem starts; a blue screen appears and reads " AUTOCHECK PROGRAM NOT FOUND - SKIPPING AUTOCHECK " and then the computer reboots itself with the same pattern. Is there any way to start the computer so the data will not be lost. I have tried to move the HDD as slave to another computer, but it doesn't wan't to recognized the slave. What to do?
I was reading one of the threads and said to use PTEdit.exe from PowerQuest and it's free except it's bringing me to Symantec site, and no where it PTEdit to be found. How do I use it and what are the steps, or if there is another way to repair it.
Thanks
Denmar

Go HERE (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=52472) for my instructions and download for making my bootable DOS floppy that runs ptedit [plus partinfo, Edit.com, and a DOS prompt] from outside of Windows.

But...
I think you probably need to run either...
XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option (http://www.informationweek.com/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897)
Or even better...
Follow the instructions in this...
Windows XP Repair Install (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm).
Especially regarding slipstreaming of SP2 (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#slipstreamxpcd).

Best of all would be to restore a recent good image of the Windows partition, but I'm guessing you don't have such a beast, right? :(

You could try Last Known Good from an F8 startup or else I would go with the suggested repair Windows XP option.

Thanks Paul, but i've tried everything from reformating the HDD. There is a lot of data on the hard drive. I'm going to try what Sylvander has suggested. Thanks both of you, and I will get back with the results. Again thanks.
