I have just attempted to reconstruct my old computer, so that I can give it to a friend. However, when booting up the cpu emits a serious of beeps and give no video feed whatsoever. I know the monitor is working fine. Anyone have any ideas?

You need to note the beeps and lookup the beep codes on this website. For example listen for short and long pauses between the beeps.

Since its a resurrected computer, some obvious things to check:

1) make sure you have RAM installed and installed properly
2) make sure you have 2nd level cache installed
3) reseat the video card and/or try another one
4) make sure the motherboard is getting power. The beeps you hear could be from the disk drive, not necessarily from the motherboard/cpu.

Count the number of beeps before a slight pause. I'd bet on 8, which is either the video card or memory chips not seated. Remove both and reseat them, and you might also clean the contacts with a red rubber pencil eraser. Be very careful to ground yourself on the chassis before handling any components, static electricity can blow them easily. Takes 2,000 volts for you to feel it, 100 volts can blow computer components.
