Before I go tearing through this puter I thought I would get some advice first.
This is an Alienware system running XP Pro, P4HT with 2gb. I am having difficulty with the rom drives auto playing music cd's, game cd's. For instance, when I put in a music cd, instead of windows media opening right up or receiving the options menu, it opens into a window, shows the drive at the top and lists the tracks, kind of like if you were to double click the A: drive to see the floppy. I have checked in device manager properties for each drive and see that they are checked to autoplay...There is also an Iomega Zip drive.

I wasn't sure if it was a bios setting, maybe a controller/configuration/resource problem.

Here is how they look in the bios:
Sata Port-0
Sata Port-1
Pata Primary Master Iomega Zip25 A
Pata Primary Slave Plextor CdR
Pata Secondary Master not detected
Pata Secondary Slave NEC dvd

Whenever any sort of disc is put in, we have to go through Control Panel to access the discs or it opens into a new window.

Just a note, there was another CD drive which I think was in the Pata Secondary Master which says Not Detected but hubbie took it out and when things started not working came and got me and here I am posting again **sigh**
both cd/dvd drives are set to CS.

Any help would be most appreciated!!!!

RClick on Drive in My Computer and from the Autoplay Tab what settings do have chosen. In particular do you have anything set to do for both Music Files and also for Music CDs? It sounds like it has been set to open in Explorer view as in the pic. Perhaps just reset the defaults?

Hey Paul, thanks for posting. Yes each drive is set to "Prompt Me Each Time To Choose An Action".

What I did is I uninstalled each drive in device manager and then uncabled/unpowered them from the puter and rebooted with no drives. Then, I cabled/powered one drive at a time and rebooted and did this with the other drives. Now it appears that they are working correctly. If I put in a game cd, the game menu starts,"Play, Install"....there isn't a prompt, it does autoplay, when I put in a music cd, it prompts me and when I select Windows Media, it it opens up and plays.

I am not sure what the deal was but all seems to be ok now. I guess if I wasn't so tired at the time, I would have thought to do all of that before I posted but I always appreciate your help!!! :p
