I've got a HP DVD Writer 630c installed on my PC and it's giving me a few problems.
When I first press the power button to switch the PC the CD/DVD drawer opens and has to be manually pushed back in. I thought it was something to do with the PC trying to boot from the CD and as it wasn't in the drawer would open. So I changed the boot sequence, that didn't have any success, it still opened.
I thought about updating the drives, but because I don't have the install disc for the drive I can't.
What makes this problem even more weird, when my wife logs into her profile for the first time, the drawer opens again and again has to manually pushed in and it won't eject. This doesn't happen when I log into my profile.
I've checked all the IDE cables are secure to both the MB and the drive. On the IDE cable is a second drive, CD drive set as master and HD set as slave, but that's never change in the 3 years I've had the PC.
Has anyone got any ideas how I can maybe fix this little annoying problem?

It may be that you and your wife both RECENT-ly accessed the content [folders/files] of an optical disk in this drive, and those accesses were recorded in the "Recent" folder for each user account.
Windows may then be attempting to check that the accessed items are still accessible [it's strange that way], and because there is no optical disk in the drive Windows is opening the drive [hint, hint] as a rather obscure way of asking you to supply the disk [in fact, I think any optical disk will be found acceptable].
I had this happen with files on a floppy!

SOLUTION
Either supply an optical disk in the drive...
Or even better...
Delete at least the shortcut(s) in the "Recent" folder that lead to the file(s) on the optical disk.
The simple way to make certain you get them all is to delete ALL of the shortcuts in the "Recent" folder.
My own "Recent" folder is located at...
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Recent

Thank you Sylvander, it seems when I located "all" the recent folder and files and deleted the files the problem has been fixed.
It's really quite weird because I delete all recent files via CCleaner every week, it must have missed some.
The drive is still acting up, ejecting poorly, not at all or not running when a disc is inserted, but I think it's more to do with with dust. I'll be giving it a good internal cleaning and hopefully that will be my problem fixed.
Thank you once again :D

"not running when a disc is inserted"
"Autoplay" isn't working?
Remember that hitting "Shift" when inserting prevents autoplay having effect.
There is probably a key combination that switches autoplay off.

"ejecting poorly, not at all..."
Could there be some program running that is busy with some task involving the content of an optical disk, and so locking the drive?

To be honest I think the drive is gubbed, I've ensured auto play is enabled via Tweaks Ui, and I'm very confident there is nothing taking control of the drive. I'm very anal about what running. :D
I've got a spare drive floating around the house so I'll install that and see how it runs.

Sounds good.
I tried on this PC, about 4 optical drives I had sitting about and 3 of the 4 had problems.
Eventually I bought a new DVD-RW drive and all the problems have gone. :)

CONCLUSION
Optical drives don't last well.
