I just recently gave my 'old' computer to my kids. It sat up for about six months and they used it for games once in a while. I just recently went in to clean it up for my daughter to use for homework, etc. Yesterday I encountered a problem. The computer told me it detected problems on one or more of my drives (I have a C & D drive) and started to run scandisk...well, it detected some bad sectors on C, but on drive D it did the same thing, but it got stuck on fixing problem for three hours. My son turned off (!!) the computer and when I turned it back on, the farthest I can get is "Verifying Pool Data".....I don't have a start up disk for the computer (lost) and it runs Win95. Can someone give me an idea what to do? Any help would be appreciated.

Boot Disk (http://www.bootdisk.com) will have the boot disk you need. Read their instructions, it's a self extracting file that makes a bootdisk, not the bootdisk itself. You can download and make the disk on another machine with no problems.

You can also make a boot disk from another win95 machine, if you can get access to one. Go to:
Start\Settings\Control Panel\Add/Remove Programs\Start Up Disk tab Have a floppy ready.

If scandisk is coming up with problems on the drive, it's very likely the drive is bad. Try running scandisk from DOS, after booting to the win95 start up disk. Use this command line for an unattended scandisk:
scandisk c: /autofix /nosummary /surface This will tell scandisk to scan the drive, fix errors, and bypass the pop up prompt asking if you want to fix errors. It might take a while, if the drive has lots of errors, let it sit there and finish. You'll have to do each drive separately. And tell your son not to touch it, it's busy!! Leave a note on it or something...

Hate to say it, but from what I've read about the problem so far, I think you'll be looking for another drive soon. If it's more than about 3 years old, Pentium 200 or less, I'd say don't try a drive larger than 8GB, most won't handle it due to a drive size limitation.
