Hi.

The Indexing service in XP is supposed to speed up searching for files.
In my file-server, most of the files are DivX, movies average 1.2GB each, and episodes average 600MB each, so there are not that many files, so what I want to know is: Should I turn off indexing service on all my file-server drives?

Does the indexing service gobble up much of the system resources even if it is enabled?

Perhaps there is no point to turning it off...

Thanks.

That is a tough one...yes, it can speed things up, but I've never noticed that much of an improvement. It also does eat up some CPU and when first building the index A LOT of drive accessing. Not quite sure how much space the index itself eats up, but it some. I've found that just having 'clean', fast drives seems to work best.

Cool, thanks.
:)

I think I will turn indexing off.

I would agree and turn it off. There can be no need for indexing when, as you point out, you only have a few large files on the relevant volumes.

Lovely. That seals the deal then. Thanks for your input. :)
