the DVD-RW drive is new
i am using XP home
i have burned DVD's on it before
you guys any ideas what is wrong?
Try dropping the speed back a bit, manually...try for about 20x.
If the error still occurs, then try different media.
If it still occurs talk to the manufacturer's tech support...they may suggest a firmware upgrade. (Do it under their direction and make sure they document the change).
If that doesn't take care of it RMA the sucker...

I concur 100% with mjc .. drop the speed (even to lowest setting if necessary), if no go change media (be prepared to test a few vendors disks), if no go dump the drive :)
PS Are you burning CD-R or CD-RW Media? Never used Nero 7 Ultra .. but anyway I find CD-RW to be far more problematic than CD-R .. mibbies that's just me though ;)

To check that it's not a hardware problem...
Try burning in a distro of Linux.
You probably already have one, but just in case you don't...
Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloading?release=desktop-newest&arch=i386&mirror=http%3A%2F%2Fubuntu.virginmedia.com%2Frelea ses%2F&debug=%5B%27country_US%27%2C+%27country_UK%27%2C+% 27continent_NA%27%5D&download-button=)
Knoppix 5.1.1 (http://iso.linuxquestions.org/knoppix/knoppix-5.1.1/)
Various Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/get.php).

Ok i will try all of that in a minute but i just burnt a DVD successfully, it seems to be CD only
Then it is looking more like speed or media being the root of the problem...

Do DVD drives use different lasers for burning CD's versus DVD's?
Just checked...
Couldn't find any disk burning program in Ubuntu.
Knoppix 5.1.1 includes kb3, but you need one drive [a reader] to read the Knoppix CD whilst burning/erasing an optical disk [DVD,CD] in the burner.
I only have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D optical burner, so couldn't test that it would work OK in Knoppix.
This drive works OK in my Win2000Pro.
But then I use...
CD-R 1-48 speed Sony
CD-RW 2-speed Traxdata.
DVD-R 16-speed Datawrite.
DVD-RW 2-speed Traxdata, 4-speed Datawrite.

I mentioned my DVR-112D [nice drive :D  ] because I noticed in the image you posted that the drive that failed the test was listed as a DVR-212D.
Are they similar but not identical I wondered?
