I am planning to get the Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-1066 2x1GB on my P5E mobo. I am just wondering how high I can overclock my ram??

1100MHz
1200MHz
1600MHz (my goal)

====
What would be the BIOS setting for each frequency? (Do I need to set the FSB frequency, RAM frequency and divider)

Its not recommended you OC..... It can damage your hardware and void the warranty

But if you feel you must
1100Mhz = Easily
1200Mhz = It will do it fine so long as you adjust the voltage slightly and maybe the latency timing (but saying this some versions of the same RAM will OC better than others)

With them just watch the temp

also do it slowly (10-15Mhz at a time)

1600Mhz = I seriously doubt it
-that speed it just too high for DDR2
-the heat will be massive
-i dont even know if your MOBO will support that speed
-the latency will have to be massive

Also why do you want that speed?

What is the FSB of your CPU 3200Mhz? :eek:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 - planning to do some serious OC..

ok

your Q6600 has a FSB of 1066Mhz (266Mhz) and a multiplier of 9

9 x 266 = 2400Mhz Stock
9 x 300 = 2700Mhz Fine
9 x 350 = 3100Mhz Maybe
9 x 400 = 3600Mhz Hardly
9 x 450 = 4050Mhz Toast

Min RAM speed needed (to the mainstream speed [Recommended])

2400Mhz ---> 533Mhz [800Mhz]
2700Mhz ---> 667Mhz [800Mhz]
3100Mhz ---> 800Mhz [800Mhz]
3600Mhz ---> 800Mhz [1066Mhz]
4050Mhz ---> 1066Mhz [1066Mhz]

As you can see there is not much point in 1600Mhz RAM :p

A few more things

What cooling you using?
What thermal paste
Make sure you monitor temps

Hope that was a help

I am not sure I understand the math in the RAM section. Would you please explain it again?
2400Mhz ---> 533Mhz [800Mhz]
2700Mhz ---> 667Mhz [800Mhz]
3100Mhz ---> 800Mhz [800Mhz]
3600Mhz ---> 800Mhz [1066Mhz]
4050Mhz ---> 1066Mhz [1066Mhz]

What is these 533Mhz, 667Mhz, 800Mhz...etc?
Thanks.

O ok lol

Right CPU FSB works with a QDR (quad data rate) so a 1066Mhz FSB is 1066/4 = 266.5Mhz. RAM works with a DDR (Double data rate) so DDR2 800Mhz is 800/2 = 400Mhz

In OC'ing the RAM frequency has to be higher or equal than the CPU's FSB

so when the CPU is at stock 2400Mhz it has a FSB of 266.5Mhz, 266.5 x 2 = 533Mhz so you need 533Mhz RAM minimum

I did it in standard RAM speeds 533Mhz, 667Mhz 800Mhz etc.

Thats good then :D you will get good cooling
