I have recently purchased two Maxtor OneTouch lll USB 2.0 320GB external hard drives.

However, I cannot get the advertised features such as Backup and Synch to work, even though, as far as I can tell, the software installs correctly.

For example, when attempting to use the Backup feature, after the folders to back-up are selected the interface doesn't move to the 'Backup Files to my Maxtor OneTouch' screen, but merely reverts to the folders to back-up screen. Hence, backups, whether automated or manual, cannot be made.

Trying to use the 'Synch' function isn't any more successful.

I've reinstalled the software a number of times on two machines, one XP Home Edition SP2 and one XP Pro SP2, but the results are always the same.

Does anyone have any insights into what is going on here?

Update:

For want of anything better to do I went to the Maxtor site and had a look at the 'OneTouch III USB Software Installation Flash Tutorial' and noticed a difference in the instructions there to the instructions I'd followed on the installation CD.

The video said the drive should be connected to the powerpoint and the computer before the machine was restarted to complete the software installation, whereas the advice from the installation CD was to connect after restarting.

Following the advice from the video improved things a little - I can now make manual backups, but still not automated backups or perform any of the sync functions.

....
sounds like a faulty system....

try redoing the installation ( after completely un-installing it following the Websites instructions)
