I'm building a system based on an ABIT KA7-100 board; only the board will not detect any IDE devices. After contacting the vendor's tech support, they agreed that the board was DOA and I was shipped a new one. This one acts the same. I've tried an IBM Deskstar ATA-100 drive that I bought new for this system, a 2.5G Western Digital with Windows 98 installed and a 2.5G Quantum Bigfoot with Redhat 6.1 installed. I've also tried 3 different cd-rom drives. Specifying drive parameters in the CMOS makes no difference. The floppy drive is detected, but it will not boot from a floppy. I'm finding it hard to believe that I've received two bad boards, but I can't figure out what could be the problem.

thanks in advance.

beleive that you can receive two bad boards in a row. I have ordered great named parts and gotten bad ones 3 times in a row!!! While I understand your wanting to be sure it isn't something else, if it doesn't recognize, it doesn't recogonize. Document every thing you did for testing, and then tell them what you did, and get the technician's opinion... that technician is gonna know more about that board than we will, and from what I hear, I would guess that board is also bad. Now I know why I stick with FIC mobo's I haven't seen a single post about them.

If you're sure the BIOS settings for the drives are correct, and the jumper setings too, you bet you can get two bad boards in a row. And from Abit, I'm surprised, they're usually fairly good boards. Maybe not top notch, but usually good boards.

They might have let a bad batch slip out of the factory. It happens...

Hm.....I just built a system around the Socket A version (the KT-7), and the first motherboard I got sent was faulty. Replacement one seems OK, fingers crossed.

While on the topic of motherboard quality...
Are Epox motherboards good?

Epox boards have a very good reputation, from what I understand, although I have no experience with them personally. Check around on the net and you'll find lots of sites that feature reviews of various hardware. Some are sure to have something to say about just about any board, CPU, or hard drive you can think of.

I think a couple of the links at my site, posted below, have links to review sites, or you can run a search on the search engine of your choice.
