Given this by someone going to Australia.
I asked if there was a [driver & Utilities] CD with it and giver knew nothing about that.
Trying to bring it into use with Win2000Pro.

Went to the Dell Driver Download webpage (http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WNT5&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=PRN_ALL_A924&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=), downloaded the driver files, installed the driver.
Installation made this printer the default, and it prints successfully.

THE PROBLEM:
The Dell All-In-One Center isn't installed, and I don't see anywhere to download it online.
Hence the device won't do anything other than print.
Tried searching the Dell users' support printer forum (http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=A940), but don't see any solution there.

QUESTIONS
1. Must this be used with a Dell PC?
2. How/where to get the Dell All-In-One Center installation files.

That printer should work with any system

The problem is the lack of original disks and Dell refuses to provide software support without an ID for/from the owner

I even went so far as to log into my Dell account and see if it would allow me any more access or info
Same results.
Nothing

The only other option that I can think of is e-mailing them and asking how much they will charge for the replacement disks :(

1. Dell refuses to provide software support without an ID for/from the owner
What kind of ID?
A unique ID as given by Dell to each purchaser of an item of their hardware?

I noticed there were instructions to provide an ID number from under the printer lid.
This printer has:
Service Tag = [number given]
Express Service Code = [number given]

2. only other option that I can think of is e-mailing them and asking how much they will charge for the replacement disks
I noticed someone answering at the forum that the driver installation file would install the Dell All-In-One Center.
And the questioner saying that this didn't work for him.
And the reply was to download and run a PATCH to uninstall the driver [I did this], then reinstall the driver again [I did this].
And the questioner reported that this was successful I think, but it didn't do it for me.
Perhaps I misunderstood; tend to read things too fast, and just get the general gist.
I'd bet I need the CD, so will probably try emailing Dell if no download link turns up.

The service Tag is the unit ID and the Express service code is the support service code/id

Once they sell and the buyer registers these numbers
They use them to keep tract of how long they support it and what if anything is under warranty..

My Account still lists the hardware I purchased from them when Dell was a good place to buy from (as in P3 / 4 ) and before

1. The screenshot below shows how this PCI hardware sub-branch looks in Device Manager.
Notice the yellow ! against the Dell Photo AIO Printer 924.

2. The properties page shows "Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)".
Not sure exactly of the significance.
Wrong drivers installed?

3. If I run the "Update Driver" wizard I get the results shown by screenshots 3 and 4.

It's starting to sound like that POS Lexmark a friend installed
That worked once then never again till we did a reinstall
Then it worked half the time
Could Not find USB device

Found it easier to just trash the thing and buy a better unit
Anything over $25 is better than that Lexmark AIO

Following the instructions in an online Dell diagnostic troubleshooter...
I disconnected the Dell, and uninstalled its drivers...
Then uninstalled my other printer, and also my other scanner.
Then re-installed the driver for the dell.

With the result that there is now [see the screenshot below] an "Unknown Device" under USB Printing Support in the Dell sub-branch [displayed "By Connection"].

I'm unable to find any drivers to make this "Unknown Device" become known.
Even "Unknown Device Identifier" hasn't found anything useful....YET.

If you have a valid (readable) Service Tag number...enter it in the box on the Dell website. That should lead you to all the available downloads for it...

Entered the service tag number and the Windows version [2000]...
But it produces exactly the same download offerings...
Which are the DRIVER, and the FIRMWARE for the "Wireless Printer Adapter 3300".

I already have the driver...
And don't have the "Wireless Printer Adapter 3300". [Wouldn't want to use it anyway]

I don't have, because it isn't offered online...
The installation files for the Dell All-In-One Center program.
I believe that's what issues the commands for scanning [and more].

Supposedly the AIO controller app (Dell All-In-One Center) is included in the driver...

A number of printer drivers, especially for USB printers, need to be installed in a specific order. In other words, you can't have the printer installed/plugged in when you start the process. Try, in safe mode, uninstalling the current install/drivers. Then, with the printer disconnected, start the install, in normal mode. At some point in the install, it should ask you to connect or turn on the printer...

1. "with the printer disconnected, start the install, in normal mode. At some point in the install, it should ask you to connect or turn on the printer..."
That's exactly how I did the original [1st] installation.
Did know that's how it was to be done.
Started the driver installation...
Was instructed to plug in the USB...
Did so, and installation proceeded.

2. "Supposedly the AIO controller app (Dell All-In-One Center) is included in the driver..."
And yet there's no sign of it having been installed. :(
In fact, there's now even less/fewer files than originally [e.g. no longer any Dell folder on the Start menu].
I think I'll restore an image of C: from before all these changes were made, then begin again.
This time I'll be better informed.
Will need to save the driver files to some partition other than C: or else they'll be gone after the restore.

Ok, I downloaded the driver package and ran it through the Universal Extractor (http://www.legroom.net/software/uniextract). It expanded the installer file to a folder, in that folder is one labeled 'apps'...guess what's in the 'apps' folder?

If you guessed the AIO Center, you win!.

So, yeah, it's in the driver package. You may want to try the UniExtract route and run the separate installer that is in the apps folder, if it doesn't install properly this time.

1. Restored the image of C: from Aug 20th.

2. Uninstalled the software for:
(a) HP Deskjet 840C printer.
(b) Mustek 600CU scanner.
Then disconnected both...
(a) from the parallel port...
(b) from the USB port.

3. Restarted the PC.

4. Installed the driver [plus whatever] software by running the main setup.exe file in the top folder of the set extracted from G11AWeb32924EN.exe [the self-extracting archive file].
[See screenshot 1 below]
I assume this runs all installations including the AIO Center.
Just in case it doesn't, I ran the setup.exe file in the apps folder.
When I did that I saw nothing happen, but heard the "whoosh" that means a prog had just [opened soundlessly, then] closed [I have a "whoosh" as the sound set for a "Close Program" event].
So I guess the program is already installed.

5. Everything looks good in Device Manager. :)
[See screenshot 2]
No yellow ! or ? to be seen.

6.
(a) When I go to "Control Panel->Scanners and Cameras->Devices", Dell Photo AIO Printer 924 is listed.
When I highlight that and click "Properties", in the "General" tab, the "On Port" & "Status" is good [wasn't good previously, no port listed and device was "Not Ready"].
[See screenshot 3]
(b) When I hit the "Test Scanner or Camera..." button, the answer given in a small window is "Your scanner or camera successfully completed the diagnostic test".

7. So how do I scan with this?
(a) On the Start menu...
The "Dell Printers" folder only has a sub-folder = "Dell Photo AIO Printer 924"...
And that only has:
Users Guide, Uninstall, Order ink.
No shortcut to run the AIO Center [I see no installation in "Program Files" either].
(b) I usually scan from within "Microsoft Photo Editor->File->Scan Image" using the Mustek, but that's now uninstalled and the Dell produces failure here.
[See screenshots 4 & 5] Normally the Mustek scanning program would run instead of this window.
(c) When I go to "Microsoft Photo Editor->File->Select Scanner Source", only a "VGA Dual Camera" is listed.

It's been a while since I've used any MS product for scanning...but you may need to have the Photo Editor look for a new scanner...

Is there a 'quick scan' button on the scanner itself?

Sylvander

1. you may need to have the Photo Editor look for a new scanner
See screenshot 1 for what the Photo Editor help files say about the fact that the Dell scanner isn't listed as a TWAIN source.

2. Is there a 'quick scan' button on the scanner itself?
It's quite sophisticated.
There are up/down buttons and a small LCD screen...
The user can hit up or down until the screen displays one from among the 3 options [scan, copy, maintenance]...
Mode : Scan
...And then hit the green > arrow to activate [so I believe, though I know little about this machine].
When I do this nothing happens.
I think it would only work if the software was correctly installed and configured.
So it's best to try it from the PC software, if there WERE any.

What are the req's of the All-in-one?

USB2?

Does your mobo support it natively?

'Quick scan' should be a real button on the scanner not thru software.

Sylvander

1. "USB2?"
The ug_en.chm users guide says:
Connectivity = USB 2.0 (full speed)

2. "Does your mobo support it natively?"
NO...
I have a PCI to USB 2.0 card fitted [and working well], and I'm connecting to one of those sockets.

3. "'Quick scan' should be a real button on the scanner not thru software"
(a) I can "copy" to paper from a document on the scanning window without any need to connect [to the PC via the USB cable].
The copy function is chosen using the up/down arrows to navigate, and Mode:Scan is displayed in the LCD window, and then I hit the green > button.
(b) However, with scanning:
QUOTES
1) "You do need to connect your printer to a computer to scan, print, and fax."
2) Start Button: "Starts the copying or scanning process. If the printer is in Scan mode, pressing this button opens the Dell All-In-One Center" (if your printer is connected to a computer).
3) Networked: "The Scan submenu is only available if the printer is connected to a network adapter. If you choose Scan as the mode, you are prompted to choose the destination computer for the scanned document. You can scroll through the available computers by pressing the arrow buttons. Pressing the Menu button selects the currently displayed computer name."
Not Networked [mine is configured thus during driver install]: "If your printer is connected locally, the Scan submenu does not appear; the host computer is automatically selected."
4) "Dell All-In-One Center — Allows you to perform various scan, copy, fax, and print operations with newly scanned and previously saved documents and images.
To access the Dell All-In-One Center:
Click Start->Programs or All Programs->Dell Printers->Dell Photo AIO Printer 924->Dell All-In-One Center." [This doesn't exist!]
5) Scanning: "You can scan with your printer using the printer operator panel or your computer.
You can also open the Dell All-In-One Center from the operator panel on your printer. When your printer is in Scan mode, press the Start button. The Dell All-In-One Center opens on your computer."

[You could download the manual and study such things direct]

4. Info found in the Users Guide:
(a) "Determine if the printer software is installed
Click Start->Programs->Dell Printers->Dell Photo AIO Printer 924. If Dell Photo AIO Printer 924 does not appear in the list of programs, the printer software is not installed. Install the printer software."
This would normally be done using the [I]Drivers and Utilities CD, which I do not have, but that folder does appear.
b) The Dell printer appears as the default in the Control Panel->Printers folder, and functions OK.
c) It also appears in Scanners and Cameras, but...
d) The Users Guide Troubleshooter suggests that I check the port to which the scanner is connected [Usbscan0], and to make sure it's plugged into that port...
But I don't know whether that's the correct port or not.

Hmm, Driverguide-dot-com found 11 donated driver file submissions. One specified as XP 64 bit and Vista 64 compatible. All the rest were for Vista only.

PCmag doesn't give a 'raving review' of it but says it's an [I]OK[I] unit...

Be wishing for Linux drivers for it soon or see if you can use a portable XP install somehow which may give you just enough options to get by with considering you are without the original driver disk.

Or something like that...

Good thing (I hope) it was free...... ;)

Any idea why the Dell All-In-One Center doesn't appear after driver install?

And why, when I try to install the AIOC using its own setup.exe file, that setup attempt closes right after start?
