Hi,

Ive tried a whole bunch of websites and I cant seem to figure this out. I used to have a pop up that said "usb not recongnized" I found a website that gave instructions on how to turn this off. I used to use a regular mouse but then yesterday it just stopped working. Ive tried all of the 3 usb ports and none of them seemed to work. So I went and bought a Centrios wireless mouse (model 2616561).. I followed the install instructions and still no luck. I went on their website and of course the driver for the model I bought isnt listed. Ive emailed them but nothing yet.

I have a HP notebook, Windows XP Version 5.1 Service Pack 2

I reinstalled the service pack from Microsofts set of instructions but them when I got to the step to modify the registry it didnt have the USB section under services.

If you have any suggestions, they would greatly be appreciated. I have no idea what to look for as far as instructions and am at a lost.

PLEASE HELP! THANKS!!!

I would start by going back and undo whatever you did from that web site

Or restore to a point before these changes were made

Sounds like you turned off the discovery feature

Thanks for responding. I have no idea what I did, I remember clicking something in the device manager to not show the error messages. This was a couple of months ago, and I dont want to go clicking things around in there. What is the discovery feature... and how would I turn it back on? I couldnt find anything in Google about it....

Sorry, Im not very experienced with computers and am quite slow with them actually.

Is there anything else that can use a USB port work. For example a USB pen drive or digital camera?

Does Device Manager list any problem devices or ones with yellow punctuation marks?

Check the BIOS setup just to sure that USB or legacy USB has not been disabled.

Since the touchpad is presumably working it would seem to be a USB related function. Some laptops have an accessory PS/2 port where you could try a PS/2 mouse as a workaround for now. Touchpads are actually PS/2 type pointing devices either always or as a rule.

It might be overkill but running a repair installation (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm) might do the trick.

I plugged my digital camera into one of the ports and it is working.
There are no punctuation marks in device manager... but I did go into BIOS and there is an punctuation mark beside Network Adapter. I couldnt figure out how to see if the keyboard or legacy was enabled?

Which model is the HP laptop?

I realise that you have also tried a wireless mouse but do try the mouse in another PC to check it out and maybe try another USB mouse in your PC if you can easily borrow one from somewhere.

PS Would this thread (http://blog.nineon.com/chintan/post/Usb-device-not-recognized-One-of-the-USB-devices-attached-to-this-computer-has-malfunctioned-Windows-XP-Error.aspx) have the sort of instructions that you followed to begin with? Registry editing is always a dodgy business.

I dont have another computer to check to see if the mice are working and my old cord mouse still isnt working.

1. "I remember clicking something in the device manager to not show the error messages."
(a) Did you disable one or more of the USB root hubs or controllers?

To check:
(b) Go into Device Manager, click "View->Devices by connection" [or similar], expand the device tree [highlight the top device (the PC), hit Numlock + *, then Numlock again].

(c) Go to each USB branch in the tree; begin at the top of each branch; right-click each item and click "Properties"; make sure that "Device Usage:" says "Use this device (enable)".
