I have an older NEC pentium 133 my kids use for schoolwork. I had to replace the CD-rom that came with the unit several years ago.
My problem is that I had to use the system recovery disk to reformat the hard drive and automatically reinstall the programs to out of box condition. Just before win 95 starts I get an error message from cd-rom auto detection utility version 1.0 telling me that it can not find the matching cd-rom model number. Program is terminated.
Obviously I cant get past this to use the computer.
I assume that if I could get to config.sys and delete the code that is searching for the matching model number I could get past this. I don't know how to do this or if I'm even on the right track. My kids are getting mad at me, please help as I have 5 daughters who are not too happy with me right now.
Thanks

It sounds like you CDROM is not ATAPI or your BIOS does not support ATAPI devices. You will need to install your CDROM in DOS to have it recognized.
Since you are using Win95, I suspect it is the BIOS. Either way, installing it through DOS should do the trick.

To get round the error in the short term. Hold down left shift after the initial memory check is out the way. Then you can choose step-by-step configuration and choose wether each particular section is loaded or not so you can skip the offending line. This will at least allow you into windows to try and recify the fault if your none too good woth DOS.

Or you could choose Safe Mode. Either way it will let you past but you will have no CD till you get the correct driver installed.

Thanks all for helping me out. Lynn and Recall I don't think I can get as far as you tell me to. When the computer is turned on I get the initial NEC screen then the Phoenix screen. It then immediately says starting msdos and goes right to the error message I spoke of with a prompt that reads C:\TEMPCD>. If I hold the left shift key before this happens I get a regulat C: prompt and it does not go into the error message. Does this help you at all?? Thanks again, your efforts are greatly appreciated.
