my computer screen went black on me it shows rebooting and when you
click on password it just stays black the only thing in my programs is
explorer and nothing else windows or anything else will not open please help me im lost

When you first start booting up your computer, trying pressing F8 once every second, the minute the system gets power. This should take you to the windows startup menu. From there go to Safe mode, and try clearing out your startup group items, or possibly renaming autoexec.bat or config.sys.

thank you for the reply i did do what you said and all i get is the safe mode screen is there anything else i can try ?

Hmm sounds like some files might be missing that windows needs to start up. How do you feel about a clean reinstall? Be warned you will lose anything and everything you ever had on that computer. Also, make sure you have all the drivers for all your hardware. If you are interested in doing this let us know and we can help you out with it.

Let's not resort to a full reinstall yet...been mulling this one over a bit.

First thing to do is replace the registry, see if that helps. Is this Win95 or Win98? Replacing the Registry is a bit different on each, easier with 98. Let me know which version you have, and we'll take it from there.

In the meantime, boot to a start up disk, or use the F8 key and choose Command Prompt Only Run scandisk, and see if it finds any bad clusters, or fixes the file system. This command line will run an unattended scandisk, including a surface scan:

scandisk c: /autofix /nosummary /surface

Make sure you include the spaces, thay have to be there.

Then get back to us, we need to know what Operating System you're running.

i have windows 98, have not been able to try to much when the only thing
i get is a black screen i can reinstall windows but that does not help nothing is coming up on the screen but a place to put password and when it is clicked im back in black ( still stunned)also would like help checking hardware for a clean install of windows 98

If you boot to a start up disk you shouldn't get to the password point, it should boot to the A drive, and boot into DOS. Or is this a BIOS password?
