View Full Version : CPU fan problems
The CPU fan in my computer has recently started vibrating and making a loud lawn mower like noise whenever I turn my computer on. After being on for around a minute the noise stops and the fan is still running. I have had a similar problem about a year ago. The CPU fan had started making a lot of noise and had eventually failed about two months after the symptoms began. This will be the second occurence and I am begining to think that there is another more serious problem causing the CPU fan to fail.

Hey there. Strange problem. Usually when it does that it just means time for a new CPU fan (bearings are going out). OR it means to buy a higher quality fan. CLEANING the fan can do wonders as well. If there's lots of dust on the blades, remove the fan and blow it out (air compressor) or use a Q-tip and clean it. It'll run more efficiently and should be quieter.
How long have you have this fan? What brand is it?

I have had this particular fan for almost a year. I is a compUSA fan and the original fan this I had been using was from Tiger Direct (probably a bargain bin fan) I had suspected that the fan was just extremely cheap since it had some wierd "features" one including a nice big hole in the back of the motor that I had noticed when removing the fan from the heatsink. But the fan that I am using now does not have these defects.
As for temperature:
System Temp (in the case): 30 degrees C
CPU temp: 39 degress C
the CPU temp had been up to 105 degrees F, but that was when the air conditioning in my dorm room was shut off. It reached about eighty degrees roughly, in my room. As for the use of the computer I usually had it running for 6 hours a day and would whut it down regularly. Since the problem arose I have been running it 24/7 with no problems. Even when the system goes into low power mode, as long as the fan doesn't stop it doesn't create any odd sounds or vibrations. I also check my hardware utility and it is still running at about 4,821 RPM.
