Newish Athlon 800mHz system, tried loading son's older game and it wouldn't load, restarted and now it hangs here. Got single beep, can start in safe mode, can go to BIOS but what do I do here?

Sounds like you loaded a DOS game that changed the registry, and you'll most likely have to replace it. The machine is now looking for DOS at boot, and it's not there.

If you're running win98 boot to a win98 Start Up disk or use the F8 key, and choose Command Prompt Only At the C:\> prompt, or change to C from the A:\> prompt, type:

scanreg /restore and choose a registry backup that was created before you loaded the game. This will replace the registry with a copy that was made on a previous successful boot. Reboot and Windows should work.

If this won't work for some reason, you'll have to do it the hard way, which means renaming files...Let me know, it will be a long post, but I'll type it all in.

In extreme cases you'll sometimes have to reinstall Windows, I can't explain why, but the installation of an older DOS only game will sometimes make Windows totally unusable. Replacing the registry should work. Let's hope so!
