when ever i close an IE window it gives the following error:
this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down

IE has numerous bugs, very common occurrence. I wouldn't worry about it much, myself.

IE 5.5 does have a heapin' helpin' of bugs...

You might try running the repair tool from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Might help.
