My monitor powers up but nothing comes up on the screen. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

By way of background:

(1)the problem occurred when I was in the process of installing a new hardrive;
(2) I have tried a different monitor- it powered up briefly, then went dead;
(3) Everything is plugged in and seated properly;
(4) When I switch the computer on, it sounds like the hard drive is being read, and the CPU fan starts up, so I assume BIOS is working;
(5)I am using a Voodoo2 3dfx card (which I removed- which didn't make any difference).

Please help!

Some system info might help.

Sounds like possibly a static electricity problem, or power supply. It takes about 200 volts static electricity for you to feel it, and less than 100 volts can damage computer components, and memory is especially susceptible.

Try removing everything and plugging it all back in, one thing at a time, including memory. Make sure you're touching a bare metal spot on the case when handling parts. If you know all the parts are properly seated, the power supply might be going bad, or can't handle the load it's under.

Try pulling everything but the video card, CPU, Ram and keyboard, see if you get a picture. If so, add one thing at a time, starting with floppy drive, until the video quits again. The last thing you plugged in is suspect, or the power supply is overloaded or going bad.

If you had everything...Where would you put it?

I had this same problem trying to install a voodoo card.... wish I could tell you what I did to get it to work. It was just one of those keep rebooting and pulling my hair out and then out of nowhere the stupid thing fired up just fine and has worked well since.

How's that for some tech advice http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
