Upon system boot Win98 cd-rom startup menu comes up. No matter what I choose, boot with or without cd-suppor, I get a bad command or file name error - Please insert win98 startup disk. I get some fast scrolling of config.sys and other errors.

Sounds like you have a corrupt boot disk. You need to make a new one. Need to get a blank floppy, do a full format to insure no bad sectors, then put it in a machine with windows 98 (this may require the cd, depends on if the computer has cab files) Go to control panel, add/remove programs, click startup disk, and tell it to create a disk.
what do you need the startup disk for, might I ask?

I found my problem was in the autoexec.bat file. Don't know how the lines got in there but I just deleted all the them. Now the computer boots fine.
