Need to know what is the minimum software I need to enable an enhanced 386, running Windows 3.1 with an internal 14.? modem to operate. There is only about 850 meg. on the hard drive and am not positive about the size of the RAM but don't imagine it's that much. I was thinking about Explorer and Outlook Express but earlier versions which didn't eat up much ram. I know the older systems used Trumpet Winsock and Netscape. Where can I find and what should I look for. Eventually she will upgrade but doesn't mind if it takes a bit longer to send and receive 'e' mail for now. Thanks.

Win3.x requires minimum 386 CPU, and DOS 3.3 or higher, if the system meets those requirements it can run in Enhanced 386 mode. I think it also has to have emm386 loaded, but not positive about that.
To check how much RAM you have you can look at the first boot screen, it should count up the amount of memory, in bytes. Or if you're using DOS 6.22 you can run MSD, Microsoft Diagnostics, at a DOS prompt, and check the memory section, also at a DOS prompt the command mem will tell you how much memory is in the computer. Use true DOS, not a DOS prompt from Windows.
