I have just purchased an Athlon 1000 with an ACER CD-RW. I have managed to copy some files onto a CD and read them back on this machine using Nero 4 software. However when I place this CD into the D drive of my old 200 MMX - which has a 16 speed CD -I get the messagemessage "the device is not ready". The old CD system is operating under Windows 98, whereas the new on works under Windows 2000me. Can anyone help me please!
Thanks

Welcome, priory!
Discs created on CD-RW drives may not work in some CD-ROM drives (and CD-R drives). But why is this so i dont know either. Maybe someone else might help here. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks for help! I have found that the problem I was experiencing was I was trying to get my old CD reader to read data held on a rewritable-not recordable- CD. Having now tried to copy onto a recordable CD, I don't have a problem- well not regarding CDs!!
Thanks.

priory, I've found the same thing to be true for my CDs. If I try to read Rewritable CDs in an old CD reader, no dice. However, Recordable CDs work just fine. I don't know exactly why, so I just use Recordables now. I have more than enough coasters already!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Glad your problem is fixed!

Just an attempt to answer the ongoing ??? mentioned above...Unlike CD-R discs the CD-RW discs aren't closed out using the ISO 9660 (or the UDF universal disk format) recording format which allows for mostly universal reading. I believe you can choose to do this before writing to the disc, but I think it will render it non-rewriteable afterwards. It is defined in how you perform the "ejection process". It is explained in the the CD burning software (at least it is in Adaptec and should be elsewhere also) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Thanks, bassvax! It's nice to know why something happens, not just that it does. I appreciate the info! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
