I tried everything reinstall the driver , fn+f7 or f9 , working in safe mode but nothing worked. Recently , i installed linux and voila the touchpad worked again ! Still don't know why it didnt work in vista or win 7 . any ideas why ?

Welcome to the forum, angig.
By virtue of the fact the touchpad is working in Linux, it would certainly suggest this is a driver issue and not a hardware failure. Could you post the model of the Gateway laptop, please. That way, we can see if there are any driver issues pertaining to this particular model.

I've looked at the Gateway site, and it appears they haven't released Touchpad drivers specifically for Win 7. However, they have them for Vista and, most of the time, these should suffice.
You didn't mention whether you were using the 32- or 64-bit version of Win 7, so here's where to look: Driver Download Page (http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2356).
If you're running 32-bit Win 7, choose a 32-bit Vista driver. Alternatively, if you're running 64-bit Win 7, choose a 64-bit Vista driver.

I have a HP Pavilion with Windows 7 Home Premium and here's how I found out how to turn it on or off. Open Control Panel and make sure you are in the View by Category. Then in the box it the top right-hand corner, start typing in the word "mouse". At the top right you will see a mouse icon with some links to a few options. Ignore all the links except the link under the mouse icon. Click it to open Mouse and then click on the button that says, "TouchPad settings." You will be able to turn it off or on there. It has always worked for me.
