Hello. We have an HP G60 running Windows 7. (It's out of warranty.) It boots up and goes to a restore point, and then runs for a minute or two and shuts down abruptly and we get the old famous blue screen with text.
We have Norton Security Suite on it because it's free with Comcast. It is reporting 5 issues, but we don't get the time to run it. I can boot ok into safe mode and the laptop will keep running.
I could use a few ideas for possible fixes.
Thanks.
Well...what ARE the issues Norton is reporting AND what does the blue screen say?

It restarts too fast to see what Norton is reporting. This evening I'll disable "automatically restart" on error and see what is going on. Last night it passed the hard drive test and the memory test.
Is there a way to do a screen capture of the blue screen text?

No. But you could take a pic of your screen and upload it to a photo host and link or post it
Basically, without knowing what the actual error is, there's about a million things it could be. Being able to get into Safe Mode, does narrow it down some.
Try running Chkdisk in/from Safe Mode. It could be something simple as a 'dirty' shutdown not getting cleared...

mjc, I don't know what to say. I got home to work on it and its running fine. Only thing I can see wrong is that Firefox will not load www.google.com for some reason.
I updated to the latest Firefox cleared everything out of Firefox.
Check the time and date...especially the date (in the BIOS).

Time and date is ok in bios. It's up to it's usual tricks this morning. Blue screen is up and staying up since I shut off Auto Restart in control panel. I can't get the picture down to a small size, so if you can tell me what you need to know I can type it in here.
First line other than canned stuff is IRQL_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Further down is STOP: 0x0000000A
Thanks.
There are no files we need to save on this laptop, so it wouldn't hurt to do a recover or restore.

Most likely a driver issue or an issue with freaking Norton have you tried going into safe mode then device manager to see whats up?
If you don't need any of the files then sure take it back to factory specs also get rid of Norton there are other free Av'e out there

In safe mode, device manager looks ok.
It's not stable enough to do anything starting normal. Within a minute I get a blue screen.
Can I get it back to factory specs from safe mode?

I'm not possative with that model but restart the computer and immediatly press F11 during boot then select "recover pc" then follow the steps? Hopefully they put in a recovery partition...

There is a recovery partition. I just restored to a setpoint of last Sunday before this started. That didn't fix it. So I'll try recovery next.
Typically, this error occurs when a driver uses an incorrect memory address. Other possible causes of this error include an incompatible device driver, a general hardware problem, or incompatible software.
MS on that stop error...
If you can get to the login or past that, then chances are it is NOT a device driver...and more likely to be a software incompatibility or an 'auxiliary' driver. The fact that it doesn't happen in Safe Mode supports this.
I second the motion...factory restore.

Doing a factory image restore now. Maybe I'll not use Norton. What can you recommend for the best free AV software?

Yup. We did that right away. We had to do a restore. Everything's ok now.
