Hi, i would like to make my computer run faster, overclock the computer.

I have been looking at those programs where it makes the ram more bigger faster, i was wondering do they actually work, or they just those programs that just reck the computer in the inside.

Also what other litlle tricks u can do apart from this???

Thanks,

I think it's fair to say that the purpose of these forums is to provide help to (frequently inexperienced) people with problems. Overclocking is an involved topic and a practise which frequently *creates* problems. So providing tips regarding overclocking here can be counterproductive.

Before trying to overclock you should read a *lot*. Be aware of potential problems and the track record of your machine for overclocking. An excellent source of information (and also excellent overclocking discussion forums) is at http://www.overclockers.com/

Amen Sled http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif........the Athalon is a "hot" chip to begin with, so overclocking requires an expensive cooling fan....by the time I found out how much it cost to cool an overclocked Athalon 900 ( I have one too) it was about the same as buying to a 1.1 Gig Athalon (which is the safe speed you can take a 900), without the risk http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. You have MUCH to learn based on your post before THINKING about overclocking cpu's.

To respond you your second question..."what other tricks can you do to speed up the computer"... I would NEVER download ANY program that promises to make your computer run faster...NONE OF THEM WORK, and they might cause ALL kinds of problems with Windows. The best thing I can tell you is to have as few programs running "Resident" as possible and keep your Hard Drive Scandisk'ed & Defrag'ed often. There is not a program out there that can stay up with a 900 mhz machine anyway!

I fully agree with all the above, don't even think about overclocking until you read everything you can find about it and know what you're getting into.

With a 900 I don't understand why you would want to try, as Randy said, nothing around will keep up with it, software wise...and it will require some major cooling.

Take a look at the PC Guide's Optimization Guide (http://www.pcguide.com/opt/index.htm) as well as the Overclocking (http://www.pcguide.com/opt/oc/index.htm) article. also check my site posted in my signature, you'll find some very good links there to Optimization info and a bit of looking will turn up some good overclocking info too. First place to check it Trish's Escape From Hardware Hell.

Another thing about the "speed up" programs is that many of them are also "adware" which adds a program that puts advertisements on your computer that it has to download. This can actually slowdown your system! The free versions are usually restricted in some manner and the pay versions, if they do anything at all, do a bunch of changes that you can do for free and manually by following something like Pete's links.

Also the best overclocking sites have all sorts of warnings about if you are using your machine for something other thanjust gaming then you really shouldn't OC it.

I must agree with Pete. Why would anyone want to overclock a 900Mghz. I've only got a 200Mghz and that fast enough for my purposes.(At the moment)
