My CD rom doesn't read some CDs it used to in the past. It also won't read 3 new one I got recently. I get the error message that the drive isn't ready. I don't think I've changed anything on my computer.

Since you say you haven't changed anything recently here are a couple of things to check...
Check in the setup to see if it's detected there.
Check the IDE cable it may have come loose.
Check the Device manager for any conflicts.
Could it be corrupted drivers?
Could it be time for a new CD ROM drive or dirty lens?
Thats all I can think of right now. Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

It could be a dirty drive lense. Purchase a CD lense cleaner disc.

It could also be the CDs themselves. Even new ones can pick up dust and other stuff from the packaging. Try cleaning them off.

Also, check your cables and the other suggestions above.

I did buy the CD lens cleaner disc but it won't read it to get it to work. I checked the cables. As stated before, it does read most of my discs. Would you suggest cleaning the faulty ones even though they look spotless? Originally posted by Rocky:

Do you have dma enabled for the cd drive? Chances are you havn't since this isn't done by default. If you have dma with some drives and some chipsets you can get the problem you describe. I've had a situation with a via chipset m/board and dna when reading cds got progressively less reliable. Changing the drive to a secondary slave (with no master) seemed to cure it for a while but some cds again refused to be read. In the end I unchecked dma in the drives properties and all has been well since.

Good call Jim. I had to disable DMA on my CDRW drive to get it to burn CD's and I haven't had a problem since.

Good suggestion.

1. Disable DMA from in System Properties
2. Clean the disks
