View Full Version : Ghost in the machine! (floppy drive)
My computer tries to access the floppy drive every hour or so (whether there is a disk inside or not). As far as I can tell, the drive still operates properly, but the duration of the accessing is growing longer, (It now tries to read a disk 6 or 7 times each hour)and it occasionally sounds sickly. I looked through past posts, but I have no programs running (except Norton a/v), and Windows Explorer is not pointing to the a drive. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
I had the same problem once and I think it was caused by a shortcut in Startup. While I wait for my memory to come back, you can check the following link for some suggestions on how to find the cause: http://www.createwindow.com/wininfo/floppybug.htm

In my case that program in the start up menu was an application of Microsoft Office, called fast find or something, which updates locations of Office files (for what reason I can't imagine), but anyway deleting it alleviated the noisy floppy access. Thanks
