I have a IBM 75GXP HDD that was connected to a Promise U-100 controller card. With that configuration, the device manager shows my HDD as a IBM and gives a serial # or something even. I also have some software called EZ-Smart for detecting HDD problems. When I connect the HDD to the motherboard on the primary IDE channel and have it set for master, and remove the Promise card, the device manager shows my HDD as a "Generic" model. AND it doesn't show up at all on the EZ-Smart program. What gives?
I'd say that Windows is using a generic driver for the onboard IDE controller. There may be a better driver, depending on what MOBO you've got. Post back with a little more info on your system and we'll see what's up.

I'm using a Microstar K7T Pro Mobo with a T-bird @ 900 mhz. I have installed the VIA 4 in 1 drivers. I am also running Windows ME. I also partitioned my drive into two drives using Partition Magic. When I boot up, and the bios is detecting IDE drives, it says IBM for the Primary IDE master. When I use any dos type disk checking utility's it list my drive correctly also. This drive is the only one on the primary IDE channel also.
