When I insert a CD the drive starts to spin very slowly. If I go into Explorer and click on the drive icon the system says there is no disc in the drive. Eventually it will recognise the disc but on after clicking on the icon several times. I've cleaned the lens on several occassions but this doesn't seem to make any difference. Also when I eject a CD it is still spinning in the tray even after it sounds as if it has stopped. Any help given will be much appreciated.

There are some cleaning things I guess you could do; however, the quickest way to solve your problem is to return the cd drive for warranty replacement if it's less than a yr. old and buy another cd rom if not under warranty....You can usually find them on the net for less than $60 and it will save you a lot of aggravation.

Take the CD ROM out of the case, take off the top and look for two round plastic drive hubs that spin the disk so the laser lens can read it. These can be cleaned with Q-tips and rubbing alcohol, make sure you don't pour alcohol into the drive. Let it dry for about a half hour with the cover on, and reinstall it, should work better.
What's happening is the drive hubs are dirty and the lower one especially can't grab tight enough to spin the disk, which has to spin before the lens can read it. It's spinning, but either too slow or intermittently.
