I've been trying to save stuff I get over the internet on my cdrw so I can reformat and clean up a few problems, but when I try writing I get a "buffer overrun" message or "output device" problem. Help! I'd hate to have to search for all those little applications I like so much again!!

I'm no genius at CDRW but if I remember correctly, buffer overruns are the result of trying to record at too fast a speed ....someone else will have a more extensive answer I'm sure.

Are you using Adaptec software? Easy CD or Direct CD? I think they have settings where you can slow down the process.
What OS are you using? I have a CD-RW on that worked great under NT, but was nothing but trouble when I upgraded to W2K. Finally, switched from Verbatim 650MB to Verbatim 700MB media -- no problems since...

I've usually heard it referred to as underrun, but it happens when the cpu/hd can't keep the buffer of the drive full of data and the burner runs out of stuff to burn...when that happens, it ruins the cd since unless it's one of the newer burn-proof drives, it can't stop and restart the burn...
You should be able to select the record speed, just set it lower...also, if you have alot of programs running in the background, or are using the computer while it's burning a cd, you may still have problems...try quitting out of whatever progs are running and leaving it alone while it records...

Thanks for the info. We have had to reduce down to single speed, and still having problems. We're using adaptec with win98se2. I'm wondering if it could be a bad memory stick. It used to work just fine. I'll have to see what's running in the background - use msconfig to look and temp. disable??

If you hit ctrl+alt+del ONE time, it will list everything that is running...select one, hit "end task" and then hit ctrl/alt/del again and repeat as necessary...you can kill everything except systray and explorer, leave these running...although be warned, if you have programs that run all the time for one reason or another, this will shut them down...
Additionally, you may get a "program not responding" message and some programs may take a couple of trys to go away...for a more permanent solution, yes, msconfig is the way to go...

What version of adaptec are u using? if it's 3.5, there was a problem that needed a patch downloaded from their website(free of course). I had to do that when I used it. Personally I find that NTI CD Copy is a much better program. I've never had problems with it. Anyhow, let me know, I have burned many a game and have made many coasters to figure out what I'm doing.
