I have recently created a second partition on my hard drive. One partition I have Windows 98 in, and in the second partition I have DOS 6.22 and windows 3.11 I have a generic dvd player and a HP CdWriter. Everything worked fine until I created the second partition. Now when I boot windows 98 sometimes it shows the cd-drives and sometimes they are not there at all. It's like windows 98 is not detecting them half the time. I don't know what I did wrong. Please help me. Thanks.

I believe this is a coincidence rather than "as a result of". You might try loading the file mscdex.exe into the root C: and then loading the cd rom drivers for ea. CD player into dos. If you dont know how to do it...just post & someone will tell you.... This is a strange one...could be a corrupt Win98 file ...If you know how to run "File Checker" in the System Information Tools section, that would tell you if a Win file is messed up and needs reinstalling.

Some system configurations can actually boot TOO FAST?!?!? At least too fast for some components to be recognized reliably. To compensate for this, some BIOS setup programs have a setting to force a delay. Try looking through your settings for something like that, note the original setting, and increase it a little to see if that helps. Does this problem happen equally with cold and warm boots (restarts), or just warm? I would not advise loading any DOS real-mode driver unless you play older DOS games, because Windows includes and uses its own protected-mode driver much more efficiently. Another option -- if you have a friend with a higher-quality brand-name drive, see if you get the same behavior with it. Last thought - I had a Hitachi DVD drive and the mfr recommended it be installed as the primary slave, rather than on the secondary channel.
