Well.......either the cd platter is not a good one, the cd Rom unit has a problem, you had other program(s) running in background or you have a cpu/mobo problem or a RAM problem.........unfortunately, it could be a bunch of stuff....Start with the assumption its something wrong with the CD Rom and go from there...does it play other similar cd's OK?

Talk about a shotgun approach! CPU/mobo or RAM??? Not a very methodical, reasoned analysis. Start with the simple, proceed to the more complicated. Has this music CD played correctly in the past? Are it and the drive lens clean? Will it play correctly in another machine? Does the music part play well in a home stereo/boombox/etc? Do you have the same problem with every enhanced CD? I do agree about other programs running in the background, especially something automatically initiated by the Task Scheduler, but only after investigating the more likely reasons.

Randy,
Nope, it's not me. But, thanks for the thought. It's highly appreciated!
Apparently I have ruffled your feathers, which was furthest from my intentions. I believe I have tried to clear the air with you, and I am sorry you feel the way you do. Could be that you are the one with the thin skin/overinflated ego.

BB 66 -- Thanks, we Badgers have to stick together.
Randy -- Sorry if you took offense, lighten up! I didn't consider the original post vague at all, just thought your response wasn't on target. Since "gaz" didn't mention any other problems with his PC, I did think it was quite a stretch to blame the CD-ROM drive, or especially CPU/mobo/RAM, when he specifically said he had made no changes to the system. My response was basically to consider the simple causes first, before assuming the worst. Disregarding what you consider my "torch", do you find anything wrong with my reply. Thanks for the reminder though -- I will update my profile.

I dont recall belittling ANYone's approach to a problem on here...If "Talk about a shotgun approach" isnt belittling...exactly what is it??? My understanding of the idea here is if you have a different approach to a persons problem....just state YOUR solution as "another" way to do it. Civility to each other makes it a much better forum.....does that make sense to everyone?

Randy,
Not sure how to take your last post. Would I believe you? Or do you really care?
After all, when I saw that I was being falsely accused, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif, I believe my response was natural.
After all, I didn't see a, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ,after your post, so I could only assume that you were serious, and that you were flaming me at the same time.
I don't recall ever belittling you or your advice. I was just pickin on ya about your "trust me" statement in the post of the guy who couldn't boot after messing with the ram. I was pickin on ya just like I do Pete when I say: Hey, the sun's bright today, put on a hat!
All I know is that I am seriously considering bowing out of this forum. I don't need this kind of hassle. On the other hand, if you are truly joking around, a http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif would help convey the tone of your post. But then, on the other hand, if you want to flame me and/or my advice, then so be it, however, I don't need to stick around to endure it.
Sincerely,
Big Blue 66

Big Blue.......I assure you, I dont have ANY, repeat ANY problem with you AT ALL...I dont know your age but at my age (53) what I find humorous might not be the same as younger or other folks and visa versa.......when you said you were kidding.....I took you at your word. I was a bit surprised at TJ's remarks and if it wasnt a joke (and not you just kidding around) then I stand on my comments to him. As far as you are concerned...please just forget I even made an inuendo that it was you...after all, you are from the same town!!

Hey Randy,
Thanks for clearing that up. Let's just go from here. I can assure you, however, that me and TJ are two completely separate people. I assume that either Pete or Charles can vouch for that.
From now on, when I'm kiddin ya, I'll make sure to put at least one, if not more, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif , so you'll know I am joking around. 'Course, I don't have to do that with Pete. I pick on him all the time. hehe
As for TJ's post, I thought too that he was being a bit harsh, although he says that no ill will was intended. We all just have to learn to get along. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif And, choose our words carefully, I reckon.
BTW, I just turned 47, so I am not far behind ya.
Between us and everybody else here, maybe we can help a person or two. Far as I am concerned, there are no dumb ideas presented here. After all, most of us have to just jump in with both feet and present our best guess as to what is going on. Seldom do we ever find out the complete history of what is happening. It's more like, my 'puter is doing this, why and what for?
Cheers,

Hey Gaz,
Terribly sorry for all the ranting and raving here. Talk about getting sidetracked!
Anyhoo, have you any progress to report? Have you tried any of the suggestions so far? I tend to agree that maybe a program, such as virus scanner, disk maintenance, etc. is trying to access the harddrive at the same time as when you're trying to play the CD you mentioned. That will surely slow the system down.
If you have no programs running in the background, (Press Ctrl,Alt,Del once, to find out which programs are running. Choose End Task on all except SysTray and Explorer. That might help) then we need to dig a little deeper.
Again, very sorry for going off on a tangent. We're here to help if we can. Post back with any other questions or progress that you have made.
Cheers,
Big Blue 66

Hmmm...guys, I don't have any hair left already...
Thanks BB & Randy for trying to get your differences ironed out. I've been wondering how that situation would end up. Hope that's past tense now, and no longer tense...Randy apparently isn't accustomed to BB's sense of humor yet, hang in there Randy, you'll get used to it...if you see something that doesn't look quite right, wait and see what I say, I can usually spot when BB is being humorous, and if I don't say anything, you can bet I'm sure he's joking. And I've never seen BB insult anyone on here so far. I get worried if he doesn't give me a hard time http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
tjaymadison: Randy's original post was basically appropriate as far as I can see, the original question wasn't exactly packed with detailed information. With what he had to go on Randy did what he could. Maybe he should have added a request for more detailed info, but we can't all think of everything every time. Randy is a long standing and well respected member of this forum and his approach is a bit straightforward at times, but does not merit rebuff.
The problem could, in fact be related to any of the things mentioned in Randy's original post, without more detailed info we can't be sure. My best guess would be programs running in the background hogging resources, or possibly driver problems. Mechanical problems with the drive would not seem all that far fetched either, and CPU/motherboard problems could apply as well.
Let's all back off a bit and try not to ruffle each others' feathers...or I'm gonna not only take off my hat, but get out the wax!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Gaz: Please give us a bit more info, we need to know if this is confined to one CD, or if others act the same, and whether you have lots of applications running in the background, and have you made sure you have the latest drivers installed. Try backing off the video resolution a bit, see if it makes a difference. Backgrounds and wallpaper, lots of icons on the desktop and high resolution can take up quite a bit of your system resources, and can affect performance in other areas.
Let us know what your system specs are, how much memory the machine has, and how much is running in the background so we can have a better idea what we're dealing with.

Look out everybody!!!!!! Run for your life!!!!!! Pete's got the wax can!!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Bassman: hehe
But seriously, I had no intention whatsoever of running anybody off. I wish Gaz would come back and tell us how he/she is doing.
Terribly sorry if I offended anyone. The main problem here is that I can't spot humor of my own bent. (What a bonehead I can be) Randy was most suredly picking on me when he accused me of being TJ. All I saw was RED at that point, however, because Randy should have used a big http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif , or a few hehe's.
I think Randy and I will be fine. He seems to be very knowledgeable and I think he genuinely wants to help people, as do I. However, he needs to learn how to use those icons, or as Sea69 always did, use a lot of boldface and exclamation points, as well as icons. hehe
Anyhoo, Pete, sorry for all this. Didn't mean to frazzle your old bald self. I'll try to behave in the future. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
