What operating system are you using? In Win 98 right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties" then choose the Device Manager tab ensure that "View Devices By Type" is selected. If there is a yellow exclamation point then you have some conflict or other problem and by opening the properties of the CDROM device it will tell you what the problem may be (post back if you find a problem and need help with it). If no problem then click on the "+" next to CDROM and then double click on the CDROM device. In this box known as properties, choose "settings" and make sure auto-insert notification is checked (On some CDRW drives with older processors and lower RAM this needs to be unchecked to help prevent buffer underrun errors when burning CDs). This tells the puter to check every few seconds for CD in the drive.
Other possibilities include loose IDE cable on the mobo or the drive itself and of course a dirty lens or the CD is too dirty or scratched to be read. Lastly, the drive could be on it's way out. Post back if problem persists.
