View Full Version : Floppy works only in DOS

My floppy drive posts, and I can boot from it, I can dir it in DOS.
But when I am in Windows Explorer, when I try to access a floppy, it comes back with "A:\ is not accessible. The system cannot read from specified device."

It registers in post, no yellow marks in device manager, and it works in other systems.

I am pretty sure my bios is set right, and the floppy controller is ok.
It is a brand new cable.
Anybody have any suggestions??
Thanks!!!!!

Try removing the floppy controller in the Device Manager, then reboot and see if it works correctly. Sounds like the hardware is OK since it boots from it and works in DOS.

Well, I re-installed the floppy controllers.
No change on accessing the floppies. Then I tried with totally different floppies and everything is fine. I must have ruined the initial floppies somehow.
Sorry to have posted when I guess I had bad floppies, but I didn't think 4 floppies would go bad at once.

Anyway, Thanks Reid!

It may be that the floppy drive's head is getting out of alignment. If it can read and write its own disks, but has problems reading program disks or floppies from other computers, that may be an indication it is going bad.

I agree, take the original floppies to another computer with a known good floppy drive and try them. If they read fine on another machine, it's likely your drive's heads are out of alignment and you need to replace it. They can be readjusted, but it costs twice what a new drive would...
