salutations to all.

for some reason my uncle's cd drive is not reading anything. i though it might be the drive itself since the driver seemed to be loaded right. i even reinstalled it, so i decided to take it out and test it on my system. it worked fine. i then put it back into his computer and now it's not working again. i though it might be a virus/software problem that isn't showing up in any other obvious ways so i decided to delete everything and start over. but, still no luck. i checked the wires and belt and it looked ok, is there something i'm overlooking? what else could it be?

please lend me your knowledge (does that sound corny or what?)

Boot into Safe Mode, remove it from Device Manager, and if more than one are shown, remove them all. Reboot and let windows install it again, see if that does it.

good idea, i tried that before and had no luck.
my situation now is i re-partitioned, re-formatted the disk and i'm trying to install the o/s but the cd drive is not working. i am using a boot disk but still no luck.

i though it might have been a software problem but, i think it's the wiring. could it be the motherboard too? the big belt is the connection device used to transfer/read the data right? so i should check that first, and the one with the red, black and yellow wiring is for power no?

If I understand you correctly, you were able to wire it correctly in YOUR computer and it WORKED...right? If you wire it correctly in his computer and it doesnt work......you could have a faulty POWER SUPPLY. I had the exact same thing happen to a computer I was just working on...one of the power cables used for IDE devices was not working correctly (strangely, worked some of the time but not all the time).....I gave the power supply a bop with my hand and it started working ( a temp fix http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)

power supply? u mean the cables right? ok, ill try that. but the light on the drive still lights up and the pc does read it.

could you tell me which cable (the power cables or the belt) detects the cd drive?

thanx.

The ribbon cable is what carries the signal to the motherboard, the power cables only supply electricity.

Check the jumpers on back of the CD drive and be sure it's set correctly. If it's on a ribbon cable by itself, it should be Master, if it's connected to either IDE channel along with another hard drive or CD device, it should be set according to the setting of the other drive. One should be Master, the other should be Slave. Usually the Master drive is at the end of the ribbon cable, Slave on the middle connector.

If you only have one hard drive and one CD ROM, it's usually best to set it up on Secondary IDE as Master, rather than as Slave to the primary hard drive.

What I was trying to say is that I have seen SOME switching power supply units (the main power supply) not deliver the correct amout of power to a cd rom unit before...but based on your prev post.....follow Pete's advice
