Hi guys (and gals)......

I had a problem come up a few weeks back...its not a big deal but now its annoying me...so thought I should fix it.

The problem: The system won't shut down....it "restarts" no matter what "selection" I make from the Start/Shut Down menu. This "occurred" all of a sudden....but since I don't shut my system down very often...I can't recall what I was doing when this showed up? It's probably some "dink" switch in the BIOS (I don't go there often...but I was in it a bunch trying to get IRQ's assigned properly...which Win98 SE does poorly). I do have all my BIOS settings recorded...and just went through the BIOS and can't find anything related to "power or power management" that is set incorrectly (or differently than before this problem occurred).

The MB is an ABIT BE6 II, BIOS flash version BEh-sh. This system is about 3 months old...running Win98 SE, updated weekly. I can't find anything on this in the MS KB....but wonder if its an OS related problem anyway? Any ideas? This has to be something simple....I just am too dumb to find it!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Thanks guys....

Disabling "Fast Shutdown" in system config (advanced tab) did the trick. What's weird...is I had pulled up an article in the MS KB about this...and had installed the Win98 SE shutdown supplement...which was supposed to disable the "Fast Shutdown" option from even being available. I guess it didn't? I remember being interrupted in this "troubleshooting" task...and I probably never went to actually check to see if the Fast Shutdown registry key entry was correct ( a "0" instead of a "1").

P-Pete.....the first thing I did after going to the MS KB article you referrenced....is go check the Fast Shutdown registry key setting...seeing that article reminded me of being interrupted a few weeks back when I was working on this. The "key" was still set to "1"....even though I'd installed the Win98 SE "Shutdown" supplement...several times actually. I also note: The pages of the MS KB article you referenced here....and the ones I had "printed" several weeks back........are not the same.....yet the article ID number is. Weird...did MS update the article without giving it a new ID (and thus a new "publish date")? That seems like some MS employee just took a huge shortcut....huh?

Thanks you guys.....seems like this problem is behind me....now onto the next one...
