I have a Shuttle Hot661 V1.1 Mobo running a p2-300. I tryed installing a P3-550X512K SL3FJ. upgraded to Shuttle bios 6610s074 which claims to handle it fine. I reset the CMOS (cleared) and when turning on, my machine makes the on beep and hard drive light lights up, but the display never comes on and no memory count is intiated. as well as the bios of the voodoo 3-3000 bios information.
I thought I might have goofed up the cpu, but it will still run on other PC (abit BE6). I tryed hard and soft jumper settings.

Check it with the old CPU if you haven't already. If it works, make sure the new one is properly seated, and properly oriented.
If it doesn't, first thing I can think of is BIOS settings, sounds like it's not making it through the BIOS. PC Guide BIOS Settings (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/set/index.htm) might help.
Only other thing I can come up with right now is This Article (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/boot/walk/ram0.htm) in the PC Guide's troubleshooting section that says possible memory or motherboard problem.
CPU not properly seated is my first guess, memory is second. Memory is the most susceptible component in the computer to ESD or static electricity. If you walked across the carpet and touched it without being grounded first, memory can easily be fried. It takes 2,000 volts for you to feel static electricity, less than 100v will fry computer components. You can create 100v turning in your chair on a dry day...
Also double check the power connections, make sure you haven't installed the memory chip(s) backward, and reseat the memory and video card, if it's been moved, try it in a different slot. Unless it's AGP, then you only have one slot...
Maybe some of the others will have some more good ideas.

Thanks for the previos answer.
I updated the BIOS before starting anything. I suspected the Intel 740
video that had the heat sink melted off, so i updated to voodoo3-3000. I can slap the old cpu in and presto.. instant boot. The memory states pc100, possibly incorrect? my next step is to put the 550 back in machine2 and see if it boots alltheway. last time i tryed it, the machine2 made it into bios set-up so I quit befor messing up the p3-800 i installed in it.
I also think I can jumper the shuttle mobo to force 66mhz, then at least i can drag about 333 out of it and see if i can boot. then maybe memory would be the logical crash point. but it would be because speed not zapped. does latency values help with memory stability? currently set at 2.
with my abit, when i changed cpu's the machine defautled to 66hmz, i don't know why shuttle doesn't take this conservative approach.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Thanks Paloe Pete,
I set memory latency to 3 (with old CPU installed) and machine booted.
it recommends latency 2 when booting so I tried it again and bam loud beep.....beep.....beep on booting. reinstalled old cpu one more time and set back to 3. guess until i get good memory I better leave well alone!
currently have 4 sticks of pc100 32meg sticks(might be some excellent counterfit crap!)
I think it's faster at 550 100mhz than 300 66mhz so for now I'm happy.
How much difference is the latency setting to system performance? in other words, is it worth buying better memory?

Don't know just how much difference it will make, but I don't think it will be major. Most system optimizations are minor, but overall they add up.
This Article (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/set/advch.htm) in the PC Guide's BIOS optimization section has a good explanation of the memory timing settings. System Memory (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/ram/index.htm) might be worth reading too. System Optimizations (http://www.pcguide.com/opt/opt/index.htm) has good info on overall optimization.
