I was trying to upgrade a Compaq 4540 running a K-6 233mmx with Evergreen's Spectra 400.Their software determined that I didn't need a bios upgrade. The Mobo as best I can tell is PWA-Titan. I seated the new processor and powered the fan but I didn't pay attention to where I removed the cdrom audio from. I actually replaced it across what I now believe to be the Socket-7 clock multiplier. The system would not boot.I realized my mistake replaced the cdrom audio cable correctly, but still would not power up. I put back original processor.Would not power up until I removed Pci video card. It then booted but locked up while trying to load win98. I loaded in safe-mode. Ran compaq diagnostics which hangs at SCSI.TM while trying to identify sys. hardware. My guess is I'll be buying another computer. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Ugh! Compaq...Oh well, I don't think you have to throw in the towel just yet. You say you can get into safe mode so I would restore the system to it's previous state and enter safe mode and into the device manager and remove the CD ROM and Video card from there and reboot allowing windows to detect the hardware and reload the drivers. Then start the process again. If there is fighting involved with that video card for an IRQ resource just install one at a time starting with the CD ROM drive. Does anyone else think this is an appropriate route?

I can't think of anything better, unless scanreg /restore might do some good...

Soon as I come up with all the answers...they change the questions!!

Thanks. That got me back to normal..minus the video card. Using onboard video now. System does nothing with video card in place. Do you think the card is fried or Mobo is damaged? Spectra upgrade still won't work. Hard drive light stays on but nothing happens. Tried different jumper settings.Maybe I fried it. I'll work through Evergreen's recommended CMOS setting changes and perhaps check Phoenix for a bios upgrade. Thanks

Is there a jumper or BIOS setting to disable the onboard video?

I believe that the onboard was disabled automatically when I added the video card.

I could not find the specific method to disable the onboard video on your model, but some sites say putting the video card in the first PCI slot may do it . Another site mentions Voodoo cards, but I believe it may apply to any card:
Voodoo3 Video Card Doesn't Work
The Voodoo3 video card has problems with the Compaq Presario computers with the onboard ATI video cards. This is due to the fact that the onboard ATI card can only be disabled within Windows. The Voodoo3 cards do not like any other graphics cards in the same machine (especially onboard ATI
Rage cards).
There are 2 ways that may get you round this problem,
1. If you go into the BIOS (F10 when the machine is starting up), sometimes you can disable the ATI card in there.
2. Try disabling the card through Windows,
Click on Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager.
Click on the + sign next to Display Adapters and Double click on the ATI Video Card.
Remove the Check mark in front of Original Configuration (Win 95) or Exist in all Hardware Profiles (Win 98).
Close all applications and restart the computer.
If neither of the above methods work, then there is no way of getting the Voodoo3 card to work. http://www.uktechsupport.f9.co.uk/compaq/faq/hardware.htm#voodoo

Here is something I found on Deja:
"this is a post from derek s. (compaq) on disabling the on-board video...it worked for me on my 4862 when i installed an ATI all-in-wonder....
------------
The onboard display adapter cannot be manually disabled with a jumper or BIOS setting. When you install a new video card, the BIOS is supposed to
disable the onboard solution automatically, although this does not always occur with every third party product.
To be successful in installing the third party video card it helps to set the onboard display adapter to standard vga before installing the new board. To do this, follow these steps:
1. start the computer normally.
2. at the desktop, right click on the My Computer icon and select properties.
3. click the device manager tab.
4. double click display adapters.
5. double click S3 Trio, ATI RAGE or display adapter that your particular Presario uses.
6. click the driver tab, then click the update driver button.
7. click next until you can select "display a list..." 8. select "show all hardware" on the bottom of this window. 9. under manufacturers choose standard display types, and under models choose standard VGA.
10. close out of the device manager and answer no to the prompt to restart the computer, then shut down the unit.
11. install your new card and follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.
12. use the device manager to disable the onboard display adapter.
