will not boot properly

I recently put in a different, used Mobo and some extra RAM memory, (other Mobo damaged!) A friend recommended that we start from scratch and reinstall windows and everthing, which we did and all was going fine whilst windows was loading, (which took quite a while.) When windows finished loading I changed a few of my personal settings and I sat back for a cosy night at my PC. However, after a few minutes everthing stopped completely. the pointer froze, Ctrl-alt-delete would not do anything, there was absolutely nothing to be done except to switch the thing off! Now, it has gotten as far as the desktop and frozen again. Sometimes it won't even get that far and freeze up, and most of the time it will not fire up at all. Sometimes it will beep, beep, beep non-stop, but most of the time there are no beeps and all that can be heard is the CPU fan. We have double checked and triple checked all the relavant jumpers (and the CMOS) to no avail. Please can someone help as in the new year I am considering spending a large amount of money on a brand new Mobo and a faster CPU and letting the pro's do it for me!

Chech the type of memory, is it compatible with your MOBO and also the amount of memory each slot supports. Is the cpu getting hot ?

I'm not sure if the RAM memory IS compatible, so how do I check that? The CPU isn't running hot, well no hotter than it should do!

I know that there are several combinations that the memory slots can support, and I think that all is well there.

Sometimes when it freezes at the desktop, the screen goes all weird and the picture cracks with lines. I can't think of anything else at the moment, but thanks for your assistance and I'll check everything again!
