After working OK for a year my computer (Win 98) now refuses to boot up properly. It always boots to a 480x640 16 color display with the printer and scanner inaccesible. The display does NOT have the Safe Mode markings.
I cannot increase the display resolution which most of my programs require. What has happened and how can I recover the situation?

What software have you installed recently? I would almost bet on a game that changed resolutions.

Try right clicking on the desktop and click Properties then click Settings. You'll see a bar about halfway down on the left with your video colors, 256, 16 bit true color etc. Change it there, and the resolution should be beside it on the right.

If that doesn't work, use the [F8] key during boot, and choose Command Prompt Only At the C:\> prompt type:
scanreg_/restore using a space in place of the underscore used here. Pick a registry backup made before the problem started. Reboot, and it should be back to the same as before.

In reply to your points:
1) No new software has been installed recently, even if I had it would not explain why I have lost the scanner and printer as well
2) Whenever I try to change the number of colors via the properties dialogue I am asked to restart, after which the resolution is still 16 colors
3) I have no registry backups from before the problem started
thanks

Have you checked under device manager for conflicts with IRQ's
for the printer and scanner? Have you tried to use another device on Lpt1
or your Com port?

To get the video resolution back install new video drivers.

The advice above concerning conflicts is a good idea too.
