My brother has a packard bell pc and he went to turn it on and it did not do anything. The monitor stayed black but the light stayed on in orange.
I tryed to put a boot disk in and nothing happened.the screen just stayed black. So we brought it over to my house and the monitor works fine on my pc. I opened up his pc and turned it on and all i could see running was the fan for the cpu. The HD i could not hear running i am really lost at this . Iam new to computers and do not know much about them can some one help me on this matter.

Glad i found this place

and i hope that everybody has a very happy new year

A couple of theories:

1) If the power supply has a 115/230v voltage switch, is it set to the right position?

2) Bad power supply?

3) Might be a poor power connection to the HDD or mainboard. (without them connected, a power supply might have a safety underload shutdown feature that is triggering.)

4) Might be a short or overload-type fault in a drive or mainboard, causing the power supply to shut down.

Those are a few theories.. If you're not familiar with basic computer servicing, please read up on the appropriate precautions before digging in. Especially, use a power strip to cut the power, and don't run the power supply without an appropriate load, and observe ESD precautions.

And ground yourself first before touching anything inside the case.

unplug the HD ribbon cable and turn it on, if it beeps, check the cable to see if it's backwards, this will cause a "no post" nowadays. if not, pull all cards and HD ribbon cable and try it. if you post, then a bad card is sitting on the table next to you. reinstall one at a time until you put the bad card in.
