system not accepting new program

I have a pentium computer which does not accept mutch of the program and game I want to intstall. While installing a program my computer give me a massage that there is an illegal operation had beem made, some times the message is DLL missing. I send my compter to 2 workshops they told me that there is nothing wrong with my compter.I will be gratefull if somebody tell me what is wrong with it.

64MB RAM
20GB memory
S3 VGA
My opreating system is win98

This might be a long shot, but may be worth a try. Go to Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information click on Tools and run the System File Checker and see if it comes up with any problems. It should give you the option to fix anything it finds.
