I have a P1 90mhz which will not POST. I have tried the RAM in another Computer. The only message I get on the screen is something like "Phoenix Bios Vers 4.04 1985-1995 Exp8059 Rev 1.3.
It will go no further. I have tried new battery. If I remove RAM then nothing on screen as is when I remove BIOS chip.
Any suggestions appreciated

Do you get any "beep codes" from the motherboard?

Well, the standard answer for a "no beeps" situation is: Bad power supply. However, your motherboard is obviously getting power and sending the text message. I don't know... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

You might try claering the CMOS and see if that helps. Locking up at that point means it's not making it through the BIOS.
Troubleshooting the Boot Process (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/boot/index.htm) from the PC Guide might help too.

Thanks for jogging my memory (the one in my cranium, what's left of it).
From the "I shoulda known betta!" files:
1.)Dry winter's day. 2.)Wearing a synthetically insulated nylon vest. 3.)Reaching down to pet a long-haired cat. 4.)Immediately touching the unplugged, ungrounded chassis of the computer I was working on. 5.)Static "Snap!" 6.)Doh! 7.)A very confused BIOS. 8.)Using the motherboard jumper "CMOS Clear" cured what ailed it. (Removing the button-cell battery for a little while would have worked also.)

Thanks for earlier suggestions. I removed the battery overnight and now I don't know if I'm getter better or worse. I now have no video signal and am getting one long beep followed by three short ones. This I think signals video ram failure. Is this part of the motherboard or the actual ram chips or the video card itself ???

One long and 3 short is the Award BIOS code for video or video memory errors. That would mean the memory chips on the video card or the card itself. Could also be a motherrboard problem.
PC Guide Beep Codes (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/sys/beep/award.htm) has info about it.
