This problem only started after an unsuccessful attempt to install
an Iomega 250MB zip drive onto my PC(750 Mhz AMD Athlon PC, 256MB, 17GB
drive, Win98). Never had a problem with the PC. Using Iomega's "Device Manager", i tried selecting "E" for the zip drive, since I already had A:, C; and D: for the cd-rom. When the system was restarted, "My computer" showed (2) cd-rom icons lettered D: and E: instead of E: for a removable device ?? Then the problems started. Now when I start my PC, only 7 out of 25 icons are initially displayed on my monitor. After ~ 2 minutes, the remainder are displayed. If I select "My computer, or the Start button, or try to close a window, the function is not executed for ~60-120 minutes.
All selected functions are delayed for an extremely long length of time.
This is very baffling and driving me crazy. I cannot think of anything else to do, short of reinstalling Win98. Please help. I'm desparate !!
Thanks to all and anyone that can possibly help - Larry

Hmm..two in a row...

Right click on My Computer and click Properties then the Performance tab, see if you're running in MS DOS Compatibility Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode and remove the zip drive, then physically remove it after shutting down. Check Iomega's site for FAQ or tech support with some info before trying to reinstall it. Make sure you turn off and antivirus when installing it too, as well as everything else running in the background.

Then boot to Command Prompt Only using the [F8] key, and run scanreg, to restore the registry. scanreg_/restore is the command to type without the underscore used here. Choose a registry backup created before the problem started.

After doing this you'll have to reinstall the zip drive, since it will revert back to the previous configuration.

After all that, I'm not sure if it will install correctly on the next try, but maybe...
