i'm having a problem with the sound on my computer. I'm using the motherboard's on board audio and when I start the computer and it goes through its initial BIOS operations it emits the normal beep through the PC speaker. The problem occurs when I plug my speakers into the motherboard. Instead of the beep going to the PC speaker it goes to external speakers and is EXTREMELY LOUD. On all my pevious computers the PC speaker and external speakers were separate. Is there any way I can fix this or at least adjust the volume of the external speakers? thanks

Not too familiar with the scenario of having the speakers plugged into the motherboard (I am sure that Pete or somebody can help you out with that one), but you should be able to adjust the volume of the external speakers. You should have a speaker icon near your computer clock. Left-click on it and you can adjust the volume to your likeness. If your external speakers have a volume knob of their own, I suggest adjusting that one first. I hope that this helps some, but I'm sure someone can get back to you regarding the speaker plug-to-motherboard situation, sorry I could not help with that one.

Don't have any brainstorms...

Try double clicking on the speaker icon and opening the main volume controls, turn the PC Speaker slider way down, and when you boot, turn the power booster on the external speakers off, and turn them down with their volume knob. If the speaker control is not there, go to the properties option, and check the box beside PC Speaker.

Don't know where the problem is that's causing the beep to come through the external speakers, if I were to guess, I'd say either the registry or an ini file. Turning the speakers and main volume control down may not solve the problem, but might be easier on your ears...

First of all thanks for the quick responses. My biggest problem is that this speaker set does not have any external controls, so to turn the sound off I need to unplug a wire from the back of the speaker. There old speakers from my last compaq system which had the volume wheel on the monitor which is I guess why they don't have any controls. I have also tried adjusting the volume on the sound properties dialog without success. I will probably end up picking up a new set of speakers and continue to be puzzled by this wierd problem. Thanks for the help and have a great Thanksgiving.
