I just installed a new sound card w/driver and now every time a sound plays, it gets stuck on. can't seem to figure out what the (blank) is going on. Removed/replaced again, same thing. PLEASE HELP.

Did you check Device Manager for conflicts? No doubt there are some.

If it is a PCI card, try a different slot. Before you do that, however, boot up in Safe Mode and delete all references to sound cards in Device Manager. Then, power down, reinstall the card in a different slot and reboot normally. Windows should find the driver and reinstall and reconfigure it.

Try that and post back.

Okay, tried everything I can think of.....

I uninstalled and reinstalled the card, first doing as you suggested, in safe-mode.....

I reinstalled windows...

I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers...

NO JOY!

Still locking on one sound and repeating. I can't figure it out. I select the preferred device...

Seems to be stuck only on Wave sounds???

Also, my old sound card was an ISA card. I removed it because there were conflicts. No conflicts now. But, does my new sound card require the ISA card??? No documentation that says it requires that. As a matter of fact, the new card is supposed to be plug & play compatible and an accelerator also.

I'll be calling Guillemot tech support in morning. I'm so frustrated right now I could just scream! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif

Have you tried updated drivers? What OS are you running, how many other pci slots do you have open?

Ok, let's back up a second. First, the box your soundcard came in should say whether it's an ISA or a PCI card. Although a PCI card looks like it will fit in an ISA slot, it's incompatible. The PCI card has to go in the shorter white slot.

Boot up in safe mode. Go to Device Manager and delete all references to soundcards. In safe mode, you will see every soundcard that has been installed in the system. Delete them all.

Then, boot up normally and Windows should find the drivers and install them.

Try that. Additionally, is it just one wav file that it gets stuck on, or all your wav files? If just one, then that file may be corrupted. If it sticks on all, then there has to be a conflict somewhere that we have just not picked up on.

Let us know how you're doing.

Okay, first, it's a PCI card, in a PCI slot. I'm not that new to computers. I did as Big Blue suggested. I removed all references to all cards and I no longer have the old card installed. I have no conflicting devices in the system according to the Hardware file in the system display. Everything should be working according to package directions. My PC meets the requirements for installation of this card.

Second, it is getting stuck on any wav file. I used the volume icon in the windows 98 task bar. The control for Wav has an audio bar next to it and it turns green when there is a sound playing. The higher pitched the sound, the higher the bar. Anyway, when I mute this control, the Wav control, I don't here the repeating noise anymore, so therefore it must be all Wav files. Whenever programs, pages, etc., are opened, I'm supposed to hear a sound associated with it. Instead, I get the repeating sound over and over....

Anyway, I'll be calling tech support. I'll let you know what happens.

Just wanted to respond and let you know that tech support says it's looping because although my cpu is pentium class it is not 100% compatible. I have to get a new processor before I can use this card. Oh well...

Hey, thanks for all the helpful suggestions. It is greatly appreciated. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi Varissul,

Sorry to hear about the CPU conflict. Just wondering if there is a different sound card that you might try, rather than going the new CPU route. Although, that wouldn't be a bad thing either. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks for posting a follow up. Sometimes people don't, and then we, or at least I, am wondering if we (I) helped or not. Ya know?

Cheers,
